In researching this teapot I learned some interesting things about the
Sadler Company. One was they began with the "Brown Betty"
shaped pot. We all know the Little Teapot Song...Short and Stout.
The other thing I learned was sample designs were often numbered and
then hallmarked by hand rather than impressed or raised.
I used the 1474 pattern number to try to find other teapots with this pattern. I did find one shown at the bottom of the
page that was
scrubbed of its gold work. If you know anything about this design,
please let me know. Send pix if you can.
I like the design. It looks like an
artist's sketch. Previous owner cared for it enough
to replenish some of the gold work. Slight difference in the color on
knob and handle top. Also, the interior has a bit
of tea stained crazing.
I like the double tabbed lid. Artist mark on lid's inside. This is a
lovely teapot that most certainly has a story to tell.
No chips or dings;
surface and interior crazing as mentioned.
Teapot is 9 1/4" spout to handle, 6 3/8" to the knob.
You can see that the gold work has been removed
